Our History

  • 1869: Auburn University began offering business courses in response to the state’s post-Civil War economic troubles. In the years that followed, the curriculum continued to expand to fit a growing field.
  • 1892: Auburn created the Department of Economics.
  • 1929: Auburn created the Department of Business Administration.
  • 1967: The School of Business was established and quickly became the fourth largest school at Auburn with 1,800 students.
  • 1984: The School of Business became the College of Business, expanding to feature five academic branches based on the functional areas of business, a framework maintained today: the Department of Economics, the Department of Finance, the Department of Management, the Department of Marketing and Transportation, and the School of Accountancy.
  • 2001: The College of Business reached 4,511 enrollees, becoming the largest school of thought of any university in Alabama.
  • 2013: The College of Business underwent its final name change and became the Raymond J. Harbert College of Business in recognition of Harbert’s $40 million commitment, the largest gift in Auburn history and the largest received by a single academic unit in the history of higher education in Alabama. Harbert, a class of 1982 Auburn graduate, is the CEO of Harbert Management Corporation, an independent investment firm responsible for managing more than $3 billion in assets.
  • 2017: The College of Business celebrated 50 years in business.
